Shocking Incident in Sonitpur District

Sonitpur, Assam – In a horrifying incident that took place in Ghagara Tea Estate near Bahbari, under the jurisdiction of Tezpur police station, a 28-year-old woman was brutally attacked and burnt to death by a group of six individuals. The motive behind this heinous crime was allegedly her practice of witchcraft. The incident occurred on the night of December 24, sending shockwaves through the community.

Arrests Made, Investigation Ongoing

The Sonitpur district police have taken swift action in response to the incident, arresting four individuals connected to the crime. However, two suspects remain at large. Madhurima Das, Additional Superintendent of Police of Sonitpur district, confirmed the arrests and stated that a case has been registered at Tezpur police station.

A Gruesome Attack

Sangita Kapi, the victim, leaves behind three children and a grieving husband. According to reports, she was brutally beaten by a group of six people who accused her of practicing witchcraft. The assailants branded her as a ‘witch’ before subjecting her to a vicious assault and ultimately setting her on fire near their residence.

Efforts to Prevent Witch Hunting

This disturbing incident highlights the ongoing issue of witch hunting in Assam. In response to such acts of violence, the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Act was enacted in 2018. The legislation aims to provide effective measures to prohibit witch hunting and ensure the safety and protection of individuals vulnerable to such accusations.

Following the incident, the village headman contacted the police, who arrived at the scene promptly. The victim’s body was later transferred to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.
