Anderson County Coroner Greg Shore released an online statement on Friday, confirming that both the father and daughter had succumbed to their injuries from the double shooting that took place on Thursday evening. The tragic event unfolded outside a residence on Cherokee Road in Belton, South Carolina.

Upon receiving the distressing 911 call around 4:15 p.m., the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), along with the Belton Fire Department, Anderson County EMS, Medshore EMS, and Belton Police Department, swiftly responded to the scene. When first responders arrived, they discovered the father and baby girl suffering from gunshot wounds in the road. Tragically, both were declared deceased shortly after their arrival, as stated by Coroner Shore.

The preliminary investigation by the coroner’s office suggests that the father was visiting his infant daughter under supervised visitation at the Belton residence. However, as the visitation came to an end, a horrifying turn of events occurred. The father produced a handgun and mercilessly shot his daughter before taking his own life. The case has since been ruled as a homicide-suicide.

The motive behind this devastating act of violence remains unknown at this time. Newsweek attempted to reach out to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office for further comments and updates regarding the case but received no response by email or via Facebook.

During a press conference, Coroner Shore provided some insight into the incident. Typically, the mother would bring the baby out, and the father would spend time with the baby inside the car with his family. However, on that fateful afternoon, when the father arrived, he unexpectedly exited the car, and what transpired next remains unclear. He pulled out a gun and fired at his defenseless 3-month-old daughter before turning the weapon on himself.

Remarkably, the baby’s mother, who witnessed the horrifying act, narrowly escaped harm. After shooting his daughter, the father pointed the gun at her but did not fire, redirecting the weapon to himself. Coroner Shore described it as a miracle that there weren’t three victims in this tragic incident.

Needless to say, the baby’s mother, who has chosen to remain unidentified, is understandably devastated and shaken by the traumatic experience.

Coroner Shore expressed his deep sorrow over the tragedy and the impact it has had on everyone involved. He stated that the entire family, as well as the first responders, had been profoundly affected by the incident. The presence of a family member, believed to be the father’s mother, in the car added another layer of distress to the already heartbreaking situation. Thankfully, she survived the incident as a witness.

The investigation into this appalling double shooting is currently ongoing, led by the Anderson County Office of the Coroner and the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.
