“Officers immediately entered the mall and ultimately determined that this was not what we would consider an active shooter situation,” stated Police Chief Mike Balken.

The victim who tragically lost his life has been identified as David Nathaniel Barron, a 40-year-old man who was shot multiple times. While a woman sustained a gunshot wound to her leg, she is expected to recover. In addition, several other individuals suffered injuries, including chest pain and a broken arm, amidst the chaotic aftermath.

The Ocala Police Department expressed their sincerest condolences to the victims’ families and emphasized their commitment to bringing the perpetrator to justice.

Suspect at Large

The alleged shooter, described as a male wearing a black hoodie, black pants, and a partially covered face, fled the scene. Authorities have released a photo compilation of a “person of interest” and are urging the public to assist in identifying the individual. If you have any information, please contact Detective Boyer at 352-369-7000 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers.

The Mall’s Current Status

Following the incident, the mall has been closed, although the parking lot has since reopened. The police have conducted a thorough search, and investigations are ongoing. At this time, it is uncertain how long the lockdown will last.

Eyewitnesses shared their terrifying experiences of evacuation and fear. Syriah Williams, who was present inside Bath & Body Works during the shooting, recounted, “The employees opened the back storage area and instructed everyone to run.”

Various law enforcement agencies, including the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, fire rescue teams, and the Florida Highway Patrol, promptly responded to the scene. Although the police have recovered the firearm used in the shooting, they have not disclosed its specific type. “This is the worst possible situation we could imagine, especially during this time of the year. A family has suffered an unimaginable loss,” expressed Police Chief Mike Balken.
