Police suspect a possible connection between a series of murders in Mpumalanga

Authorities in Mpumalanga are investigating a potential link between several murders that have occurred in the region. This development comes after seven individuals presented themselves at the Piet Retief police station to hand over a firearm belonging to a deceased man.

According to the suspects, the deceased man had intended to harm them, but they managed to disarm him. They claim that during the altercation, the man tripped and fell, and they left him at the scene. However, upon further investigation, the police discovered that the victim had been assaulted and subsequently pronounced dead by medical professionals. Consequently, the seven suspects were taken into custody for questioning.

The suspects, whose ages range from 20 to 33, are scheduled to appear before the Piet Retief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 27 December 2023.

Seven additional fatalities reported

In a disturbing turn of events, seven more individuals have lost their lives in what police suspect may be connected to the initial incident mentioned above.

On Friday night, a 26-year-old man was allegedly robbed of his cellphone. Determined to retrieve his stolen property, the victim enlisted the help of others and confronted a group of individuals whom they believed to be the culprits. However, it was later discovered that these individuals were not responsible for the robbery. Unfortunately, the confrontation turned violent, and the victim sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries the following day.

In what may be an act of revenge, four other individuals were attacked in Oosloop, Piet Retief. Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the other two passed away in the hospital. Subsequently, more incidents occurred in Mangosuthu and Phosa, resulting in two deaths at the scene and one individual losing their life in the hospital on Sunday morning.

Police are currently working tirelessly to apprehend all those responsible for these killings. While the connection between the arrested suspects and these murders is yet to be confirmed, investigators are actively exploring the possibility.

Quadruple arrest made in fatal stabbing case

In an unrelated incident, police in Limpopo have made four arrests following a fatal stabbing at a local tavern.

The suspects, aged between 18 and 25, allegedly engaged in a heated argument with a 20-year-old man, Jason Mlambo, which quickly escalated into a physical altercation. During the fight, one of the suspects brandished a sharp object and inflicted three fatal stab wounds to the victim’s upper body. The suspects fled the scene immediately after the attack.

The tavern owner rushed the critically injured victim to the nearest hospital, but sadly, medical professionals pronounced him dead upon arrival.

On Friday, 22 December 2023, authorities apprehended three of the suspects at Mabuladithlare village, while the fourth suspect was surrendered to the police station by their family at Haarmanstal. The suspects will soon face murder charges in the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court once investigations have concluded.

Police continue to investigate both cases diligently.
