Police are continuing their search for the individual responsible for a fatal shooting at the Paddock Mall in Ocala, Florida. The incident, which took place on Saturday, resulted in the death of one person and the injury of another during what is typically one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

Ocala Police Chief Mike Balken stated that the shooting appears to be a targeted act of violence. The victim, identified as 40-year-old David Nathaniel Barron, was found dead from gunshot wounds in a common area of the mall. A woman who was wounded in the leg is expected to survive.

The suspect fled the scene on foot following the shooting. Chief Balken described the suspect as a Black man wearing black pants, a hoodie, and a black mask.

This tragic incident occurred just two days before Christmas, a day that is typically anticipated to be the second busiest shopping day of the year, following Black Friday. It serves as a stark reminder of the prevalence of gun violence in America, as it continues to impact various aspects of everyday life.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, more than 42,000 individuals have lost their lives to gun-related incidents in 2023, with over 18,400 of those deaths being classified as homicides.

The Paddock Mall was evacuated on Saturday (Dec. 23, 2023) after a shooting report.

In the early hours of Sunday, the police released several images of a “person of interest” in connection with the case. They are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the individual, who was seen wearing dark clothing, white sneakers, and a red hat.

Chief Balken acknowledged the presence of numerous witnesses inside the mall at the time of the shooting and expressed hope that their cooperation would help bring the perpetrator to justice.

The police initially received a report of multiple shots fired at approximately 3:40 p.m., prompting a swift response and the deployment of additional personnel due to the initial description of an “active shooter” situation.

However, upon entering the mall, the police determined that it was not an active shooter scenario, as previously reported.

The police discovered the victims and recovered the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.
