A shocking incident unfolds in Taunton as a New Bedford man breaks into a home with intent to kill

A New Bedford man broke into a Taunton home and tried to kill a man Friday evening, but only succeeded in shooting him in the leg, according to authorities. The 22-year-old assailant, Joshua Manuel Deleon, now faces multiple charges including assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, home invasion, and more.

Taunton police responded to a distressing 911 call around 10 p.m. on Friday night, reporting a disturbance involving a gun at a residence on Newcomb Place. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a woman who led them to the second-floor apartment where the incident occurred.

Inside the apartment, a terrifying scene unfolded as officers found two men engaged in a violent struggle. Fearing the presence of a firearm, the officers drew their department-issued firearms and commanded both men to cease their fight.

Complying with the police’s orders, the men were separated, revealing that one had sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, while the other, later identified as Deleon, had suffered head trauma and other injuries from the altercation.

During the investigation, authorities discovered a gun near Deleon, and shockingly, he was also found to be wearing body armor. Further examination of the scene revealed two additional firearms, three bullet casings strewn across the floor, and bullet holes in the ceiling.

The gravity of the situation escalated when it was revealed that a woman and her four children were present in the apartment on the third floor during the shooting incident. Although frightened, they miraculously escaped physical harm.

Both the victim and Deleon were promptly transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Fortunately, the victim’s injuries are not life-threatening, and a full recovery is expected.

Due to the severity of his injuries, Deleon was airlifted to a Boston hospital where he continues to receive treatment. He remains in police custody under hospital supervision.

Taunton authorities believe that this heinous act was not a random act of violence, as Deleon and the victim were acquainted prior to the incident. It is suspected that the conflict originated from a different community and subsequently spilled over into Taunton.
