Accident – Death – Obituary News : Taunton Police Department Arrests New Bedford Man After Armed Home Invasion Leads to Shooting

TAUNTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The Taunton Police Department has apprehended a suspect after a resident was shot during an armed home invasion late Friday evening. The incident occurred on Newcomb Place in Taunton, Massachusetts.

According to authorities, officers received a distress call from a cellphone located near the scene. The caller was heard screaming for help. Upon arrival at the multi-unit house, officers were informed that a firearm was involved in an ongoing disturbance.

Upon entering the second-floor apartment, officers discovered two men engaged in a physical altercation. One man was on top of the other. The officers, upon seeing a firearm, immediately drew their own weapons and ordered the men to cease fighting. Both individuals complied with the officers’ commands.

During the confrontation, one of the men sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. The officers promptly called for emergency medical assistance. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Joshua Manuel Deleon from New Bedford, suffered head trauma and other injuries. A firearm was found near him, and the officers observed that he was wearing body armor. Additionally, two more firearms and three bullet casings were discovered at the scene.

Further investigation revealed that the apartment on the third floor may have been involved in the shooting, as officers discovered bullet holes in the vicinity. The residents of the third-floor apartment, a woman and her four children, were unharmed but frightened.

Deleon was transported to a local hospital for treatment before being airlifted to a Boston hospital, where he remains in custody. The other individual involved in the altercation, who sustained a gunshot wound, was taken to a different hospital for overnight treatment and is expected to recover. The two men were acquainted with each other, and it is believed that the altercation originated in another community before spilling over into Taunton.

Deleon is facing multiple charges, including Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon, Assault and Battery, Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Armed Assault with Intent to Murder, Possession of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, Home Invasion, Possession of Ammunition without a FID Card, Use of Body Armor in the Commission of a Felony, Possession of a Firearm with a Defaced Serial Number, and Discharge of a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Dwelling.
