Man Fatally Struck After Exiting Vehicle in Westport Crash

Tragic Incident on Route 15 South Claims a Life

WESTPORT, Conn. (WFSB) – A devastating accident on Route 15 south in Westport resulted in the untimely demise of a man who was struck after exiting his car following a collision.

According to the Westport Police Department, the incident occurred around 10:35 p.m. on Saturday, prompting immediate response from law enforcement. The authorities received a report of a single-car crash just before Exit 42.

Upon arrival, state troopers discovered a white 2016 Toyota Corolla positioned in the middle of two lanes, while a white 2021 Infiniti Q50 rested on the right shoulder of the road with its front end pressed against the wooden beam guardrail.

After conducting a thorough investigation, state police revealed that the Toyota was traveling southbound when it collided with the concrete median barrier, causing it to come to an uncontrolled stop in the left lane.

Tragically, the Infiniti, also traveling southbound, struck the rear end of the Corolla. At the time of the impact, the driver of the Corolla, identified as 28-year-old Mateo Gaviria, had exited his vehicle and was struck by one of the involved vehicles.

Despite the immediate life-saving efforts performed by the troopers, Gaviria succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The driver and passenger of the Infiniti sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were subsequently transported to Bridgeport Hospital for medical attention.
