Virginia Authorities Confirm Identity of Human Remains Found After 20 Years

(CNN) — Human remains discovered in the woods of Galax, Virginia last year have been identified as belonging to a 5-year-old boy who went missing over two decades ago, according to authorities.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office made the discovery in September 2022 and determined that the remains had been there for an “extended period of time,” as stated in a news release. It was announced on Thursday that the remains have been positively identified as those of Logan Nathaniel Bowman, who went missing in January 2003.

In their efforts to identify the remains, law enforcement enlisted the assistance of a Texas-based company specializing in forensic-grade genome sequencing and genetic genealogy, as mentioned in the release.

The company successfully developed a comprehensive DNA profile of the remains and conducted a comparison with the child’s family members, ultimately confirming the match to Logan.

Details of the Investigation and Previous Charges

Logan’s biological mother, Cynthia Davis, and her then-boyfriend, Dennis Schermerhorn, were charged in connection with the child’s disappearance in February 2003, according to the sheriff’s office.

Court documents from Grayson County reveal that Davis entered into a plea deal in April 2004, resulting in a 15-year prison sentence and 15 years of probation for two felony charges of child neglect and one felony charge of homicide.

Efforts to obtain a response from Davis’ attorney by CNN were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

Schermerhorn, on the other hand, was sentenced to one year in jail in 2004 on a single felony count of simple child neglect, as indicated in court records. The murder charge and additional neglect charge against him were dismissed by a judge.

Attorneys listed for Schermerhorn were contacted by CNN for comment but no response has been received thus far.

Ongoing Investigation and Anticipated Charges

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has declared that the investigation is still ongoing and expects to bring new charges in relation to the case.

CNN’s Samantha Beech and Celina Tebor contributed to this report.
