MOUNT PLEASANT — A report of a single-car crash on December 17 in the Village of Mount Pleasant has resulted in four criminal charges against a 29-year-old Franksville man. Brett Baumann, the driver involved in the crash, now faces charges including a third drunken driving offense, obstructing an officer, operating after revocation, and failing to install an ignition interlocking device on his vehicle.

If convicted of all four misdemeanors, Baumann could potentially face up to two years and six months in the Racine County Jail, along with a maximum fine of $15,100. Currently, Baumann is being held in custody at the Racine County Jail on a $750 cash bond and a $3,000 signature bond.

According to the criminal complaint, police officers on patrol near Spring Street and Sunnyslope Drive arrived at the scene of the crash. Multiple witnesses informed the officers that Baumann was attempting to flee the scene on foot. One witness stated that Baumann was driving erratically, swerving at varying speeds in his silver Lexus. The witness even observed Baumann appearing to be “passed out while behind the wheel” and promptly notified the police.

Baumann crashed his vehicle into a light pole before making an attempt to escape. However, an officer was able to locate and apprehend him. During the arrest, Baumann resisted, but the officer managed to successfully take him into custody. Baumann confessed to crashing the vehicle and pleaded with the officers not to take him to jail. Police noted that Baumann exhibited slow speech, delayed movements, and difficulty balancing. As a result, he was arrested for the offense of drunken driving.

A blood draw was conducted at a local hospital to determine Baumann’s level of intoxication. However, the results of this test were not included in the criminal complaint.

Baumann’s criminal record reveals four previous drug-related convictions, as well as two prior convictions for drunken driving. In 2013, he was convicted of misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia, and in 2015, he faced three felony convictions for manufacturing/delivery of a non-narcotic and two convictions for possession of narcotic drugs.

The two previous drunken driving convictions occurred in 2013 and 2017, both in Racine County. Earlier this year, Baumann had his driver’s license revoked for a period of two years. It’s worth noting that Baumann’s maximum blood alcohol content is 0.02, which is lower than the legal limit of 0.08 set by the state.

Baumann’s next court appearance is scheduled for a status conference on March 11 in Racine County Circuit Court at 8:30 a.m.
