Edwin Spears, a prominent member of the Nine Trey Bloods street gang with connections to the Lucchese crime family, has been charged by a federal grand jury for attempting to transport a substantial amount of narcotics to the United Kingdom. The cache of drugs, including 12 kilos of cocaine, over 500 pounds of marijuana, and 1,000 THC cartridges, along with fake identification documents, was discovered during a search of a private plane at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey.

Edwin Spears, commonly known as “Money,” was apprehended on November 16th along with Leonardo Petrosillo, two unidentified women, and Spears’ girlfriend. The FBI agent, Steven Olewnick, revealed in an affidavit that the drugs were found in “twelve large luggage bags” and a cardboard box.

One of the women, referred to as “Individual-1” in court documents, is an adult exotic dancer from Maryland who was paid to travel to Teterboro Airport via Uber to claim ownership of some of the luggage. The other woman, identified as “Individual-2,” is a friend of the dancer.

During the arrest, Petrosillo was found to be in possession of three counterfeit New Jersey licenses and two fake Social Security Administration cards. All licenses displayed the same photo of Petrosillo but bore different names, while the Social Security cards featured the names from the licenses.

Although Spears initially claimed sole responsibility for the drugs, both him and Petrosillo were charged by federal prosecutors with conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and conspiracy to export controlled substances. Surveillance footage from a nearby hotel showed the two men pushing carts filled with luggage from vehicles to the hotel, which matched the description of the luggage found by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The prosecutors argued that the evidence against Spears and Petrosillo is overwhelming and requested their remand during trial. They highlighted that the defendants were apprehended on a chartered private plane destined for the United Kingdom, carrying significant amounts of controlled substances.

Connections to La Cosa Nostra

Prosecutors revealed that Edwin Spears has historical and ongoing ties with members of La Cosa Nostra. Previously, in 2007, Spears was arrested while serving a sentence in East Jersey State Prison for his involvement in a drug and cellphone smuggling scheme with a corrections officer and Lucchese family members. The New Jersey Attorney General’s office handled the case.

The Nine Trey Bloods gang gained notoriety for their appearance in rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine’s music videos. However, one of their members eventually kidnapped the performer, leading to Tekashi 6ix9ine testifying against the gang in 2019.

Legal Proceedings and Potential Sentencing

Initially, bail conditions were set for Edwin Spears, including a $500,000 bond secured by a property in Florida, reportedly owned by his sister. However, prosecutors discovered that the property is owned by a trust in which Spears’ sister is a member. Florida law prohibits the use of such property as collateral, prompting the defendants to remain incarcerated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

If convicted, both Spears and Petrosillo face a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison. As of now, the lawyers representing the accused individuals have not responded to media inquiries.
