The Indiana State Police has been requested to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred in Marshall County. The incident involved a Deputy from the St. Joseph County Police Department and an Officer from the Mishawaka Police Department.

According to reports, the shooting took place on Sunday, December 24th, at around 5 a.m. in the 200 block of South Dixie Way in Roseland. Police were called to the scene following reports of shots fired.

Shortly after the initial call, a St. Joseph County Deputy spotted the suspect vehicle, a Black 2004 Lincoln SUV. The Deputy attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the driver fled the scene, leading officers on a pursuit. The chase continued south on Capital Avenue/Elm Road, with officers from the Mishawaka Police Department joining in.

The pursuit came to an end when the driver of the Lincoln drove into a field approximately half a mile south of the intersection of Elm Road and Tyler Road in Marshall County. The driver then abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.

Officers were able to locate the suspect, and during the encounter, shots were fired by a St. Joseph County Deputy and an Officer from the Mishawaka Police Department.

Tragically, the suspect, identified as 54-year-old Johnny Lee Wood from Elkhart, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy has been scheduled to take place on Tuesday at the Marshall County Forensic Center to determine the cause of death.
