Tragic Accident Claims Life of Construction Foreman

A devastating incident took place at the construction site of the Wong Wian Yai station on the Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRT)’s Purple Line, resulting in the tragic death of a male worker. The victim, identified as Cholasit Suksabai, a 23-year-old construction foreman, lost his life when he was crushed by falling steel bars.

Accident Details and Investigation

The MRT issued a statement reporting that the fatal accident occurred on Sunday at approximately 8am. The incident took place while a crane was lifting round steel bars from a diaphragm wall. The worker sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Following the incident, the crane operator, Cherdsak Saenkhuan, aged 56, was apprehended by the authorities for questioning. He has been charged with recklessness causing death, pending further investigation.

Construction Project and Company Involved

The construction at Wong Wian Yai station, situated in the Thonburi area of Bangkok, was being carried out by Unique Engineering and Construction Plc. The company was contracted under Contract No 4 to undertake the construction of the Purple Line extension between Tao Poon and Ratburana.

MRT’s Response and Safety Measures

In response to the tragic accident, the MRT has ordered Unique Engineering and Construction Plc to immediately halt all work that involves the use of cranes. Furthermore, the company has been instructed to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the accident. It is also required to review and enhance its safety measures to prevent any recurrence of such incidents in the future.

Compensation and Support for the Deceased Worker’s Family

The MRT has assured that the family of the deceased worker will be provided with compensation for their loss. This gesture aims to offer support and assistance during this difficult time.
