According to witnesses, Finlayson was shot and killed in front of her 9-year-old daughter while trying to protect them both. The incident occurred on December 4 when Finlayson reached out to deputies for help, stating that her boyfriend was refusing to leave her alone. Deputies quickly responded to an apartment in the 2100 block of East Avenue J-8 and could hear an argument taking place inside. As they attempted to enter the residence, Finlayson opened the front door while armed with a large kitchen knife, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD).

Allegedly, Finlayson told deputies that she intended to stab her boyfriend for pushing her daughter. She then moved towards her boyfriend while still holding the knife, prompting the deputies to take action. The situation escalated rapidly, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting that fatally wounded Finlayson. The deputy responsible for the shooting has been identified as Ty Shelton.

Paramedics at the scene provided immediate medical treatment to Finlayson before transporting her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The tragic event has left Finlayson’s family devastated and seeking justice for her untimely death. The lawsuit filed by her family claims that Finlayson had called for help due to her former boyfriend strangling her and causing harm to her daughter.

Tracy Hall, Finlayson’s mother, also expressed her disbelief, emphasizing that their expectation was for the officers to protect and serve, rather than cause further harm.
