The family of Naini Finlayson, a 27-year-old mother, has recently filed a $30 million wrongful death lawsuit against the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and L.A. County. This legal action comes after Finlayson was tragically killed during a domestic dispute in Lancaster. A vigil was held on Saturday, where loved ones gathered to honor her memory and shed light on the issue of domestic violence.

According to witnesses, Finlayson was shot and killed in front of her 9-year-old daughter while trying to protect them both. The incident occurred on December 4 when Finlayson reached out to deputies for help, stating that her boyfriend was refusing to leave her alone. During the phone call, authorities could hear screaming and sounds of a struggle, indicating the urgency and danger of the situation.

Deputies quickly responded to an apartment in the 2100 block of East Avenue J-8 and could hear an argument taking place inside. As they attempted to enter the residence, Finlayson opened the front door while armed with a large kitchen knife, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD).

Allegedly, Finlayson told deputies that she intended to stab her boyfriend for pushing her daughter. She then moved towards her boyfriend while still holding the knife, prompting the deputies to take action. The situation escalated rapidly, resulting in a deputy-involved shooting that fatally wounded Finlayson. The deputy responsible for the shooting has been identified as Ty Shelton.

Paramedics at the scene provided immediate medical treatment to Finlayson before transporting her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The tragic event has left Finlayson’s family devastated and seeking justice for her untimely death. The lawsuit filed by her family claims that Finlayson had called for help due to her former boyfriend strangling her and causing harm to her daughter.

The family’s attorney, Bradley Gage, expressed confusion and sorrow, questioning how a woman who sought help from law enforcement ended up being hunted down and killed by officers. Tracy Hall, Finlayson’s mother, also expressed her disbelief, emphasizing that their expectation was for the officers to protect and serve, rather than cause further harm.

In response to the incident, the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department issued a statement, acknowledging the seriousness of all deputy-involved shootings. They assured the public that the body-worn camera footage of the incident will be released earlier than required, in an effort of transparency. The department also highlighted their commitment to a thorough review process, which includes evaluating whether the shooting followed department policies and procedures. Additionally, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, will conduct a legal analysis to determine if any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.

During the investigation, a kitchen knife with an approximate eight-inch blade was recovered at the scene. No other injuries were reported in connection with the incident. LASD has provided a summary of the incident, which can be accessed on their official website.

Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to contact LASD’s homicide detectives at 323-890-5500. Anonymous tips can also be submitted to L.A. Crimestoppers at 800-222-8477.

As the investigation continues, Finlayson’s family hopes that their lawsuit will bring attention to the importance of protecting victims of domestic violence and holding law enforcement accountable for their actions. They seek justice for Naini Finlayson and hope that her tragic death will lead to meaningful change in how such cases are handled in the future..
