Trans Man Arrested for Allegedly Killing Woman who Rejected Proposal

CHENNAI: A 27-year-old transgender man was apprehended by Thalambur police in the early hours of Sunday for allegedly murdering a woman who had declined his proposal. The accused, identified as Vetri, reportedly tied her up and burned her to death near Ponmar on Saturday night. Following an inquiry, Vetri will be sent for judicial remand, according to the police.
The victim, identified as Nandini, a 25-year-old engineer from Madurai, was employed in a software company in Perungudi. She had befriended Vetri, also from Madurai, during her time as a student. At that time, Vetri had not disclosed his transgender identity to Nandini.
The pair relocated to Chennai for work. A few months ago, Vetri revealed his gender identity to Nandini and proposed to her, only to be turned down.

“Six months ago, Nandini entered into a relationship with another man. Enraged by this, Vetri allegedly hatched a plan to kill her. On Nandhini’s birthday, which was Saturday, Vetri told her he wanted to surprise her and took her out,” the police stated.
Vetri then purportedly restrained Nandini in an empty plot near Ponmar and ignited a fire, resulting in her death.
The police discovered the victim’s body on Saturday night and sent it for postmortem examination. On Sunday morning, Vetri was apprehended. Further investigation is underway.

The deceased was identified as Nandini (25), a native of Madurai, who was an engineer working in a software company in Perungudi. While she was studying in Madurai, she befriended the accused Vetri, also from Madurai. Police said Vetri had not come out to Nandini as a trans man at the time.
