November 27, 2023 Shooting Incident

On November 27, 2023, the San Antonio police shot and killed a man after he attempted to flee from a traffic stop. The incident took place in the 4400 block of West Commerce Street near Southwest 29th Street at around 1 a.m.

According to the SAPD release, the suspect, later identified as Steven Lopez, was a passenger in a vehicle that had been pulled over. As the vehicle slowed down, Lopez jumped out and started running. One officer chased him on foot while giving commands, while the other officer exited the patrol vehicle.

As the suspect continued to run, he turned towards the officers and pointed a gun at them. In response, both officers fired several rounds, striking the suspect. Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene, and a loaded handgun was recovered near him.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure, pending the outcome of the investigation. Both officers have five years of service with the San Antonio Police Department.

November 28, 2023 Shooting Incident

On November 28, 2023, another shooting incident occurred involving the San Antonio police. The incident began when the department’s Covert Response Unit observed a wanted suspect exiting a building and getting into a car near West Commerce and 36th Street.

Additional units were called to assist in following the suspect’s car. When an officer initiated a traffic stop, the suspect crawled out of a window with a gun and ran towards a field. Despite officers’ commands to drop the weapon, the suspect fired a shot, hitting an officer’s chest body armor.

Multiple officers returned fire as they pursued the suspect, ultimately striking him. The suspect was transported to the hospital for treatment. He now faces charges for Unlawful Carry of a Weapon/Felony Conviction, Possession of a CS 1-4 grams, Evading Arrest/Detention, and Aggravated Assault Against a Peace Officer.

During the incident, three other passengers were detained, but no one else was injured.
