Austin Police Identify Suspect in Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting on Sixth Street
The Austin Police Department has identified the suspect involved in a deadly officer-involved shooting that occurred on Sixth Street last weekend. The suspect has been identified as Trei Michael Adriec Hernandez, 29 years old.
Responding to Reports of Illegal Entry
On the night of December 16th, at approximately 11:52 p.m., three uniformed officers from the Austin Police Department responded to a report at the Soho Lounge bar, located at 217 E. Sixth St. The report stated that an individual was attempting to enter the bar illegally while carrying a firearm and had refused to undergo a pat-down search before entering. This information was obtained from an affidavit acquired by KXAN earlier this week.
According to the news release issued by the police department on Friday, a bar employee informed the officers that the suspect, later identified as Hernandez, was carrying a weapon and should not be allowed to enter the premises.
Deadly Confrontation
At approximately 11:54 p.m., the officers approached Hernandez. However, upon their approach, Hernandez swiftly drew his firearm and aimed it in the direction of both the officers and innocent bystanders. The officers responded by discharging their department-approved firearms at Hernandez, who also fired his weapon in return.
Hernandez sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at around 12:02 a.m.
Impact on Soho Lounge
Upon further investigation, detectives discovered that multiple projectiles had penetrated the Soho Lounge. The front glass of the establishment exhibited several holes, and numerous defects were observed within the premises. It is believed that some of these projectiles may have passed through the suspect.
Injuries and Internal Investigations
Three bystanders were injured during the shooting and were subsequently transported to the hospital. Of the injured individuals, one suffered serious injuries while the other two sustained non-serious injuries. Fortunately, no officers were harmed in the incident.
The three officers involved in the shooting have nine, eleven, and thirteen years of experience with the Austin Police Department, respectively. As per department policy, all three officers have been placed on administrative duty pending the conclusion of an internal investigation.
Ongoing Investigations
Two separate investigations will be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The first investigation will be a criminal inquiry into the actions of the suspect, in collaboration with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office. The second investigation will be an administrative review of the officers’ response, conducted by the APD Internal Affairs Unit and the Office of Police Oversight.
