Authorities were alerted to the situation after receiving a distressing call from a cellphone in the vicinity, with the caller heard screaming on the line. Upon arriving at the multiunit house, responding officers were informed that there had been reports of a firearm involved in an ongoing disturbance within the home. As a precautionary measure, additional officers were called in for backup.

The officers, after announcing their presence outside the residence, were granted access by a woman who answered the door. Inside the second-floor apartment, they discovered two men engaged in a physical altercation. With reports indicating the presence of a firearm, the officers drew their service weapons and ordered the men to cease their struggle.

Complying with the officers’ orders, the men stopped fighting. It was at this point that the officers noticed one of the men had sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Concerned for his wellbeing, they immediately requested emergency medical services from the Taunton Fire Department.

The other man involved in the altercation, identified as 22-year-old Joshua Manuel Deleon from New Bedford, was found to have suffered head trauma and other injuries. Authorities discovered a firearm near Deleon, who was also wearing body armor. The officers subsequently located two additional firearms and three bullet casings on the floor.

Based on visible bullet holes, investigators suspect that gunshots may have been fired into the third-floor apartment above where the altercation occurred. Officers spoke with a woman residing in that apartment, who confirmed that she and her four children were frightened but unharmed during the incident.

Deleon was promptly arrested and is now facing a range of charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery, assault with a dangerous weapon, armed assault with intent to murder, possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, home invasion, possession of ammunition without an FID card, use of body armor in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number, and discharge of a firearm within 500 feet of a building.

After being initially taken to a local hospital, Deleon was later transferred to a Boston hospital via medical helicopter. He is currently in police custody and receiving treatment for the serious injuries sustained during the altercation.

The Taunton resident who was shot was transported to a different area hospital, where they are expected to recover from their injuries after receiving overnight treatment.

Police have determined that the two men involved in the altercation are acquainted with each other, indicating that the incident was not a random act of violence. Authorities believe that the conflict originated in a different community and overflowed into Taunton.
