Man Fatally Injured in Truck Accident Involving Low-Hanging Wires and Falling Transformer

A tragic incident occurred in Franklin, as a man lost his life when the truck he was driving collided with low-hanging wires, leading to a transformer falling onto his vehicle. The Connecticut State Police have identified the victim as 61-year-old Gary Pizzo from Norwich. The authorities were alerted to the motor vehicle collision in the vicinity of Champion Road shortly after 6 a.m. on Friday.

As per the initial investigation conducted by the police, the unfortunate incident took place when a 2020 Kenworth Construction T880 truck, which was carrying a roll-off dumpster owned by CWPM, was heading west on Champion Road. It encountered low-hanging communication cables that stretched across the roadway from utility poles. Regrettably, the truck collided with these wires, causing significant damage. Despite the impact, the truck continued its course in a westerly direction, leading to the breaking of two utility poles. Tragically, one of the utility poles held a transformer that toppled onto the truck’s cab.

Following the accident, emergency services rushed to the scene and promptly transported Gary Pizzo to Backus Hospital in Norwich. However, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Pizzo succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the hospital.
