Tragic Accident Claims Life of Founding Member of The Dixie Chicks

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM/NEXSTAR) – Laura Caroline Lynch, a 65-year-old woman from Fort Worth and a founding member of The Dixie Chicks, tragically lost her life in a head-on collision on Friday night, December 22. The accident occurred along U.S. Highway 62 in Hudspeth County, Texas.

The Texas Department of Public Safety identified Laura Caroline Lynch as the victim of the crash. The news was also confirmed by the remaining members of the band, now known simply as The Chicks.

Laura Caroline Lynch was an integral part of The Dixie Chicks from 1990 until 1993. During her time with the group, they released three albums before she departed. The band would later achieve global stardom with the release of their 1998 album, “Wide Open Spaces,” which featured the three remaining members: Emily Strayer, Martie Maguire, and Natalie Maines.

The tragic collision occurred around 5:45 p.m., approximately 25 miles west of Dell City and 8 miles west of Cornudas, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

According to authorities, the accident transpired when a pickup truck attempted to overtake another vehicle on the two-way undivided portion of U.S. Highway 62, resulting in a head-on collision with Laura Caroline Lynch’s pickup truck.

Laura Caroline Lynch was pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the other vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was subsequently transported to an El Paso hospital. The identity of the other driver has not been disclosed by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Due to the crash, the highway remained closed until 1 a.m. on Saturday, December 23.

In a heartfelt Instagram post on the official Chicks’ account, the group expressed their shock and sadness at Laura Lynch’s passing. They reminisced about the time they spent making music, sharing laughter, and traveling together. The Chicks acknowledged Lynch’s significant contributions to the band’s early success, highlighting her undeniable talents that helped propel them from street busking to performing on stages across Texas and the mid-West.

The accident is currently under investigation, and further details have not been disclosed at this time.
