Mother Charged and Man Wanted After Baby Fatally Beaten in Jackson

On Friday morning, the Jackson Police Department announced the charging of Yolanda Hunter, the mother of a 1-year-old child who tragically lost his life on Thursday. The authorities have charged Hunter with Felony Child Abuse. However, it is expected that her charges will be upgraded to Capital Murder following the completion of the autopsy.
According to Chief Joseph Wade, the Jackson Police Department is actively searching for another individual believed to be connected to the incident. Chief Wade stated that this person was with the child moments before he stopped breathing. The individual informed a neighbor about the child’s respiratory and feeding difficulties before leaving the scene.
Chief Wade emphasized, “The bruises and trauma inflicted on this child did not occur overnight. We suspect that this has been an ongoing pattern of abuse. We are committed to ensuring that all those responsible are held accountable for their actions.”
The authorities have identified the wanted individual as 33-year-old Herman Coleman, who also goes by the name Herman Gardner. It is believed that Coleman may have had a relationship with the child’s mother.
Inside the residence, where the tragic incident occurred, four other children were present. The Child Protective Services (CPS) have taken custody of these children to investigate if they have also been victims of abuse.
Chief Wade expressed his deep concern, saying, “As a police chief and a father, yesterday’s situation deeply disturbed me. Losing a life is always tragic, but when it’s an innocent baby whose life has just begun, and an adult consciously decides to take that away, it hits differently. We must not tolerate or normalize such criminal behavior. I am fully dedicated to reducing violence in the city of Jackson.”
The Jackson Police Department, in collaboration with federal agencies, is actively searching for Herman Coleman. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts is urged to contact the authorities immediately.
