Gunfire Erupts Outside El Portal West Mexican Grill and Cantina, Two Injured

Accused Shooter Arrested and Faces Multiple Charges

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A chaotic scene unfolded outside El Portal West Mexican Grill and Cantina in Bakersfield, California, as a night of revelry turned violent. The incident, which occurred on November 26 at around 2 a.m., resulted in two individuals being struck by gunfire. The alleged shooter, Billy Burell, a 26-year-old Taft man, was swiftly apprehended by the authorities.

Burell, who is due back in court next month, has pleaded not guilty to a range of charges, including attempted murder, assault with a gun, recklessly discharging a firearm, possession of a gun and ammunition by a felon, and resisting arrest. Despite the severity of the charges, Burell was granted bail and is currently free on $250,000 bail.

The shooting incident occurred amidst a high visibility patrol by local law enforcement due to ongoing gang-related activities in the area. According to police reports, various local criminal street gangs, such as the East Side Crips, West Side Crips, Colonia Bakers, and East Side Bakers, frequently utilize this location as a common hangout.

As police were patrolling the 1100 block of Calloway Drive, they heard gunshots and immediately rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they were met with chaos as hundreds of people were running and yelling. Amongst the commotion, officers spotted Billy Burell walking briskly with an angry expression on his face, clutching a tan handgun by his side.

Law enforcement quickly instructed Burell to put down the weapon. However, he defiantly yelled, “I didn’t do anything” and continued to walk away. In response, officers drew their guns and approached Burell cautiously. They noticed that he had concealed the gun in his right rear pocket and proceeded to encircle him.

Despite their show of force, Burell resisted arrest when officers attempted to handcuff him. After a brief struggle, he was eventually subdued and taken into custody.

The reports indicate that multiple witnesses positively identified Burell as the shooter. Meanwhile, security guards at the scene informed the police that they had broken up a fight near the front entrance of El Portal West involving two males. Unfortunately, a second fight erupted southeast of the restaurant, leading to the shooting incident.

While being interviewed in a holding cell, Burell adamantly denied firing a gun or even possessing one. However, his claims were debunked when officers found a firearm in his possession. Despite the overwhelming evidence against him, Burell remained uncooperative and continued to deny any involvement.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of maintaining public safety and the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat gang-related activities in Bakersfield. The El Portal West Mexican Grill and Cantina shooting has left the community on edge, highlighting the need for increased vigilance and proactive measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
