Remains of Missing Boy Found in Galax, Virginia Identified

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has announced that remains discovered near Galax, Virginia last year have been identified as those of a young boy who went missing in 2003. The identification brings closure to a longstanding missing person case.

The discovery of the human remains was made on September 6, 2022, in a wooded area off Iron Ridge Road in Galax. Investigators determined that the remains had been there for a significant period of time, indicating a potential connection to the long-unsolved disappearance.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office enlisted the help of Othram Inc., a private company based in Texas specializing in forensic-grade genome sequencing and forensic genetic genealogy. Through their expertise, a full DNA profile was obtained from the remains and compared to family members, resulting in a positive identification.

The young boy has been identified as Logan Bowman, who was only five years old at the time of his disappearance. Logan was reported missing in January 2003. His biological mother, Cynthia Davis, and her then-boyfriend, Dennis Schermerhorn, were previously charged in connection with his disappearance by Grayson County officials. With the recovery and identification of Logan’s remains, new charges are expected to be filed.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to Othram Inc., Grayson County Sheriff’s Office-Virginia, Virginia State Police, Galax Police Department, Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NEMEC), Team Adam, National Missing and Unidentified Persons System – NamUs, United States Secret Service, Virginia Probation and Parole, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection for their invaluable assistance in the case.

This tragic development serves as a reminder of the importance of ongoing efforts to locate missing persons and bring closure to their families. The identification of Logan Bowman’s remains provides some solace to his loved ones, who have long awaited answers regarding his disappearance.
