Remains Found in Galax, Virginia Identified as Missing Boy from 2003

CARROLL COUNTY, Va. — The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office announced that remains discovered in a wooded area near Galax, Virginia last year have been identified as those of a young boy who went missing in 2003. The identification brings closure to a long-standing mystery.

On September 6, 2022, deputies from the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call regarding possible human remains in the vicinity of Iron Ridge Road in Galax. After conducting an investigation, law enforcement officials determined that the remains had been in the area for a significant period of time.

To aid in the identification process, the sheriff’s office sought assistance from Othram Inc., a renowned private forensic company based in Texas. Othram specializes in forensic-grade genome sequencing and forensic genetic genealogy. Through their expertise, Othram was able to obtain a complete DNA profile from the remains and compare it to potential family members.

The remains have now been positively identified as those of Logan Bowman, who was only five years old at the time of his disappearance. The news brings a sense of closure to Logan’s family, who have been awaiting answers for nearly two decades.

Logan Bowman was reported missing in January 2003. At the time, his biological mother, Cynthia Davis, and her then-boyfriend, Dennis Schermerhorn, faced charges related to his disappearance, as determined by Grayson County officials. With the discovery and identification of Logan’s remains, new charges are expected to be filed in connection with this tragic case.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to Othram Inc., Grayson County Sheriff’s Office-Virginia, Virginia State Police, Galax Police Department, Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office, National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NEMEC), Team Adam, National Missing and Unidentified Persons System – NamUs, United States Secret Service, Virginia Probation and Parole, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection for their invaluable support and assistance throughout the investigation.

The identification of Logan Bowman’s remains marks a significant breakthrough in a case that has haunted the community for nearly two decades. As the authorities move forward with new charges, the hope for justice and closure for Logan and his family remains strong.
