GREELEY, Colo. – In a recent announcement, the Greeley Police Department revealed the discovery of three advanced card skimmers at ATMs across the city. These new technology skimmers are described as “nearly paper thin” and were found at undisclosed 7-Eleven store locations in Greeley last week.

Unlike traditional card skimmers that are placed on top of card readers, these innovative skimmers were cleverly inserted inside the card slot, making them harder to detect. They were designed to record the card data of unsuspecting individuals who used the compromised ATMs.

What sets these skimmers apart is their ability to record victims’ PINs through a pinhole-sized camera discreetly placed above the PIN pad. Greeley police have described the camera as “barely noticeable”. This sophisticated method allowed the criminals to obtain both card data and PINs, enabling them to commit identity theft and financial fraud.

The Greeley Police Department has warned that similar skimmers have been found on fuel pumps and retail registers in northern Colorado and the Denver metro area. The discovery of these skimmers has raised concerns among business owners and the community, urging them to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities near ATMs or card readers.

Last month, on December 19, police technicians who were present at one of the affected 7-Eleven stores spotted one of the suspects. They immediately alerted nearby officers, who swiftly moved in and apprehended the individual. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Lenard Berei, was subsequently arrested and booked into the Weld County Jail. Berei is facing multiple charges, including possession of identity theft tools, identity theft, criminal possession of a financial transaction device, theft, and cybercrime.
