CHICAGO — A man recently indicted in the deadly shooting of a 24-year-old man outside a West Roseland youth center in January remains at large, according to FBI Chicago.

The FBI announced on Thursday that they are offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Preston Powell, the wanted suspect in the case. The shooting resulted in the death of Stephon Mack and left another individual injured.

Recent developments in the case have revealed that Powell, along with 24-year-old Anthony Montgomery-Wilson, were charged in a murder-for-hire plot that led to Mack’s death.

According to court documents, prosecutors allege that Montgomery-Wilson and Powell conspired to murder Mack in exchange for money.

Montgomery-Wilson was taken into custody on December 4 and has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges. A hearing for his case is scheduled for January 16, 2024.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Powell, who is currently evading capture.

The incident took place on January 27, 2022, at around 3:45 p.m. Chicago police responded to a shooting outside the West Roseland Youth Center located on the 400 block of W. 111th Street. Stephon Mack was shot in the head and chest while exiting the church, and a 40-year-old security guard accompanying him was also injured.

Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where Mack was later pronounced dead.

Police believe that Mack and the security guard were targeted by the suspects, who arrived in a dark-colored Chrysler 300 and opened fire. The brazen nature of the crime has shocked authorities.

Siobhan Johnson, special agent and special affairs officer for FBI Chicago, expressed her concern over the case, stating, “This case was so brazen. [The youth center] is a place where someone goes to help turn their life around, to receive mentoring. It’s where youth go to become productive adults – members of our society – and this individual was targeted while trying to work to that effect. It was violent. It was in public.”
