According to the DPS, the incident took place around 11:25 p.m. on Thursday, December 21. A 2018 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling east on US 60 in the outside lane, approximately five miles east of Hereford. Unexpectedly, the pickup truck veered across the inside lane, into the center median, and eventually across the westbound lanes. The vehicle then careened into the north ditch, initiating a side skid before ultimately rolling over.

Tragically, the driver, identified as Coby Collums, a 24-year-old resident of Amarillo, was not wearing a seat belt during the time of the accident. As a result, Collums was ejected from the pickup truck and suffered fatal injuries. Deaf Smith County Justice of the Peace Karen Boren pronounced him dead at the scene.

Following the rollover, the Silverado came to a halt in the north ditch, resting upside down and facing southeast. The Texas DPS stated that the posted speed limit in the area was 75 mph, and road conditions were dry and clear at the time of the crash. Currently, the authorities are conducting an in-depth investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of wearing seat belts while driving. Seat belts are a crucial safety measure that can significantly reduce the risk of severe injuries or even death in the event of an accident. The Texas DPS and other law enforcement agencies continually stress the importance of seat belt usage to ensure the safety of all motorists on the road.
