Man Dies in Lee County Police Pursuit
LEE COUNTY, Ala. (WTVM) – A man lost his life on December 21 during a police pursuit in Lee County. The incident took place around 7 p.m. when Lee County officials received a distress call from a motorist traveling eastbound on U.S. 280 near Lee Road 251, just east of Salem. The caller reported a white sedan dangerously swerving between traffic lanes and provided the license plate number as well.
Lee County deputies promptly located the vehicle shortly after 7:00 p.m. CST, still heading eastbound on US 280. The sedan was being operated recklessly, prompting deputies to initiate a traffic stop. However, the driver accelerated in an attempt to evade the police.
A high-speed pursuit ensued, with the vehicle continuing eastward into Phenix City, traversing various roadways including U.S. 80 and Summerville Road. Phenix City police, Russell County sheriff’s deputies, and an ALEA trooper joined the chase as speeds soared to approximately 130 miles per hour.
Eventually, the pursuit reversed direction, heading westbound towards Opelika on U.S. 280. Spike strip tire deflation devices were strategically deployed at the intersection of U.S. 280 and Lee Road 379, successfully puncturing the sedan’s tires. However, despite the deflated tires, the white sedan continued westward at an alarming speed of nearly 100 miles per hour.

The vehicle came to a halt near the intersection of U.S. 280 and Lee Road 249 in Bleecker. The driver quickly exited the sedan and initially resisted the efforts of the law enforcement officers attempting to apprehend him.
To subdue the driver, officers resorted to using a stun gun. However, within a minute of being handcuffed, the officers noticed that the driver had stopped breathing. Recognizing the severity of the situation, they urgently requested an ambulance and began administering CPR while also administering Narcan, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses.
Despite these efforts, the driver, now identified as 34-year-old Jeremy Jackson from Opelika, was pronounced dead by medical personnel at Piedmont Columbus Regional, where he had been transported.
Given the involvement of multiple agencies, Sheriff Jones has requested the Opelika Police Department to lead the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident as an impartial party.
The deceased driver, Jeremy Jackson, will be transported to the Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for a postmortem examination to determine the cause of death.
