Accident – death – Obituary News : LAS VEGAS (TCD) — A 29-year-old woman has been sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in prison after pleading guilty but mentally ill to the fatal stabbing of her mother last year. Hend Bustami, the convicted killer, will serve at least 10 years in the Nevada Department of Corrections for second-degree murder with the use of a deadly weapon. Additionally, she will serve a minimum of five years for an enhancement of using a deadly weapon. Bustami has been credited with 420 days for time served and will have access to mental health treatment during her incarceration.

The sentencing comes after a tragic incident that occurred in the early morning hours of October 26, 2022, in Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Metro Police Department responded to a call about an unconscious woman with multiple lacerations on June Flower Drive. Unfortunately, the victim, identified as Afaf Hussanen, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to KLAS-TV, a psychologist’s report indicated that Bustami experienced intermittent exacerbations of psychosis and required ongoing psychiatric treatment. This information likely played a role in the judge’s decision to sentence Bustami to prison with mental health support.

Police investigations revealed that an argument between Bustami and her mother escalated, resulting in the fatal stabbing. Bustami fled the scene but was later apprehended in Barstow, California.

During the incident, Bustami made a chilling 911 call, stating, “I think I killed my mommy.” It was reported that she hit her mother in the head with a glass table and proceeded to stab her with shards of glass. The disagreement between the two women allegedly centered around cigarettes.

This tragic event was not the first encounter between Bustami and law enforcement. A month prior to the stabbing, Bustami was involved in an incident at Harry Reid International Airport. She dined at a Chili’s restaurant but left without paying. Airport police were contacted, but they initially had difficulty locating Bustami. Eventually, they found her sleeping near the security checkpoint, hindering airport operations.

Bustami’s behavior escalated at the airport when officers approached her. She became belligerent, attempting to spit on them and claiming harassment due to her attractiveness. Further investigation revealed an outstanding warrant from Las Vegas Municipal Court. When officers attempted to arrest her, she accused them of being perverts trying to rape her because they had never encountered someone as good-looking as her.

This case highlights the tragic consequences of untreated mental illness and emphasizes the need for comprehensive mental health support within the criminal justice system. Bustami’s guilty plea but mentally ill designation ensures that she will receive the necessary treatment while serving her prison sentence.
