RCMP Responds to Gunfire Incident on Red Earth Cree Nation
In a news release following the incident, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) stated that members from Carrot River and Nipawin, along with the Provincial Protective Services Branch, swiftly responded to multiple reports of gunfire on Red Earth Cree Nation on Tuesday around 3:40 a.m.
Arrests Made and Confrontation Occurs
Upon arrival, officers apprehended two individuals. The Saskatchewan Incident Response Team (SIRT) confirmed that the police continued their search for a man who was the subject of the initial calls. During this search, they encountered a 25-year-old man.
SIRT reported that a firearm was discharged, striking the driver’s side window area of an RCMP vehicle, causing non-life-threatening injuries to the driver. In the ensuing moments, a confrontation unfolded between the man and the police, resulting in a fatal shooting. The man was struck by a service carbine fired by one of the RCMP officers.
Immediate medical attention was given to the man by the officers until paramedics arrived. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation Initiated
The RCMP promptly notified SIRT about the fatal shooting at around 7:15 a.m. In response, a team of five SIRT investigators, along with its civilian executive director, was dispatched to commence the investigation. Additionally, a community liaison has been assigned to facilitate communication.
At the scene, a shotgun was recovered and seized as an exhibit by SIRT. The organization’s investigation will scrutinize the conduct of the police during the incident, including the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. Meanwhile, the RCMP will continue its investigation into the initial reports of gunfire.
SIRT has announced that no further information will be released at this time. A comprehensive final report will be made available to the public within 90 days once the investigation concludes.
