Man Wanted in Connection with Fatal Shooting Outside Youth Center

CHICAGO — Authorities are still searching for Preston Powell, who is wanted in connection with a deadly shooting that occurred outside a West Roseland youth center in January of last year. The FBI Chicago has announced a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to Powell’s arrest and conviction.

The shooting incident resulted in the death of 24-year-old Stephon Mack and left another individual injured. Recent developments in the case have revealed that Powell and 24-year-old Anthony Montgomery-Wilson were charged with a murder-for-hire plot, allegedly conspiring to kill Mack in exchange for money.

While Montgomery-Wilson is currently in custody and has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges, Powell remains at large. An arrest warrant has been issued for him.

The incident took place on January 27, 2022, at around 3:45 p.m. Chicago police officers responded to a shooting in the 400 block of W. 111th Street, where they discovered Mack shot in the head and chest. Another individual, a 40-year-old security guard for the youth center, was also injured.

According to the authorities, the suspects arrived at the scene in a dark-colored Chrysler 300 and opened fire on Mack and the security guard. The shooting occurred in broad daylight, outside a place that aims to mentor and support young individuals in turning their lives around.

“This case was so brazen,” said Siobhan Johnson, special agent and special affairs officer for FBI Chicago. “The youth center is a safe haven for those seeking guidance and a chance at a better future. Targeting someone in such an environment is not only violent but a direct assault on the community.”

Authorities are urging anyone with information on Powell’s whereabouts to contact the FBI’s Chicago Field Office at (312) 421-6700 or submit a tip online at tips.fbi.gov.
