Kenosha County deputies continued the chase through Racine and Milwaukee counties before terminating their involvement. At around 2 p.m., Waukesha police were alerted about a vehicle linked to an armed robbery in Milwaukee.

According to a criminal complaint, Waukesha police attempted to conduct a traffic stop after spotting the car speeding and weaving through traffic on State Highway 164. However, the driver refused to pull over, even driving into oncoming traffic and narrowly avoiding a collision with another vehicle.

Waukesha police, Wisconsin State Patrol, and Waukesha County sheriff’s deputies joined the pursuit in an attempt to apprehend the driver. The complaint details how the vehicle ran multiple stop signs and red lights as it evaded law enforcement. However, the pursuit was called off after nearly two miles due to heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic in downtown Waukesha.

A second traffic stop was initiated near St. Paul and Barstow, but the driver continued to flee, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph. During the chase, an officer collided with a citizen’s vehicle, resulting in the citizen being transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the complaint.

As the pursuit continued, the suspect extended his hand out of the window, releasing a “powder-like substance” into the air. Despite encountering spike strips near Meadowbrook and Rolling Ridge, the vehicle managed to keep going.

Eventually, the car veered off the road in an open area west of the Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin building in the town of Delafield. Officers utilized a PIT maneuver to bring the car to a stop, and it came to rest in a marshy area. During the incident, four Waukesha police squad cars sustained damage, while an Illinois State Patrol squad was also involved in a collision earlier in the day.

Despite law enforcement’s attempts to apprehend him, the suspect refused to surrender and continued to rev his engine. Eventually, a Waukesha police K-9 successfully apprehended the suspect, who has now been identified as Joseph Marino.

Following the arrest, Marino was taken to a hospital to receive treatment for a dog bite inflicted by the police K-9. Prosecutors later discovered a wallet in Marino’s possession containing dollar bills with a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine. The pursuit spanned approximately 10 miles in Waukesha County, and several other vehicles were either struck by Marino as he fled or by authorities attempting to apprehend him.

In light of the incident, Waukesha County prosecutors have filed the following charges against Marino:

  • Fleeing/eluding an officer (two counts)
  • Second-degree recklessly endangering safety (three counts)
  •
