Dramatic Escape Attempt Foiled

According to authorities, a team of dedicated officers from the Provincial Carjacking Joint Task Force (PCJT) was diligently carrying out a vehicle stop in the vicinity of Eva Road and West End Mall around 5:30 a.m. on December 18. However, the suspect, in a desperate bid to evade capture, chose to flee the scene, intentionally crashing into two unmarked vehicles.

The recently released video, shared by the police, showcases the two unmarked cars strategically positioned to block the entrance to a parking garage. In a matter of seconds, a quick-thinking officer narrowly escapes harm’s way just before the suspect smashes into both vehicles, causing the stolen car to flip onto its side.

Rescue Operation Ensues

Following the harrowing crash, the Emergency Task Force sprang into action to safely extricate the two suspects trapped inside the overturned vehicle. Both individuals were subsequently transported to a nearby hospital, where they received medical attention for their non-life-threatening injuries.

Additionally, one of the officers involved in the incident sustained minor injuries and was also taken to the hospital for evaluation and treatment.

“Officers assigned to the provincial carjacking task force identified a stolen vehicle. In an attempt to prevent a dangerous pursuit, they strategically positioned their vehicles to box in the suspect. However, the driver recklessly rolled the stolen car in an effort to escape. Our officers skillfully extracted the two occupants to ensure their safety and promptly placed them under arrest,” explained Acting Duty Inspector Errol Watson, during his statement to reporters at the scene.

Suspects Linked to Spree of Break-Ins

Law enforcement officials have revealed that the captured suspects are believed to be responsible for a string of three break-and-enter incidents that occurred in the Etobicoke area. The first break-in took place on December 3, followed by two more on December 13.

In each of these distressing incidents, the perpetrators forcibly entered homes during the early morning hours, specifically targeting car keys left inside. Shockingly, in two instances, the suspects engaged in confrontations with homeowners, demanding the keys. In the third incident, they managed to stealthily snatch a set of car keys while the victims were asleep, evading detection.

Charges Laid Against the Culprits

Rashid Zulmai, an 18-year-old male, has been identified as one of the suspects and is now facing a total of 14 charges related to this investigation, including the serious offense of robbery with violence. The second suspect, a 16-year-old male, is facing 12 charges, including robbery with violence. In compliance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the identity of the minor cannot be disclosed at this time.
