Trinh T. Nguyen Sentenced to Life in Prison for Killing Her Two Sons
A tragic incident in Upper Makefield Township in May 2022 resulted in the loss of two young lives. Trinh T. Nguyen, a 40-year-old mother, has been sentenced to spend the rest of her life behind bars after pleading guilty to two counts of first-degree murder on December 20, 2023.
The horrifying event unfolded when Nguyen shot her two sons, 9-year-old Nelson Tini and 13-year-old Jeffrey Tini, while they were in their beds. She also attempted to shoot a neighbor at 119 Timber Ridge Road in Upper Makefield. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, both boys tragically passed away a few days later.
Appearing before Common Pleas Judge Raymond F. McHugh, Nguyen pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, in addition to one count of attempted murder and other related charges.
Judge McHugh handed down a severe sentence, ordering Nguyen to serve two life terms without the possibility of parole for the murder of her sons. Additionally, she received a maximum sentence of 10 to 20 years for the attempted murder of her neighbor, who happened to be a cousin to Jeffrey and Nelson Tini. It is important to note that all of these sentences will run consecutively.
First Assistant District Attorney Jen Schorn expressed satisfaction with the negotiated plea and sentence, stating that it ensures Nguyen will spend the remainder of her life within the confines of a correctional facility. The gravity of her actions and the impact on the victims’ families necessitated a severe punishment.
A Week of Planning
The investigation conducted by Bucks County and Upper Makefield Detectives revealed that Nguyen had been planning the killings for at least a week beforehand. During this time, she even wrote a handwritten will, detailing instructions for the recipient regarding the disposal of her and her sons’ remains.
Assistant District Attorney Schorn described Nguyen’s writings as emanating a “simmering rage.” In her manifesto, Nguyen blamed others for the problems in her life, including her imminent eviction from the Timber Ridge home where she resided.
Law enforcement officers found the evidence compelling, as Nguyen’s written plans and manifestos clearly indicated her malevolent intentions. The notes showcased her hatred towards others and the individuals she held responsible for her circumstances.
A Devastating Impact
The court hearing was attended by family and friends who delivered emotional impact statements, illustrating the profound effect the tragic deaths of the two young boys had on their lives. The boys were described as caring, fun-loving, and adored by all who knew them.
Prior to passing the sentence, Assistant District Attorney Schorn presented a poignant slideshow featuring several photos of the two boys, always seen together and smiling. Some images showed them with their baseball teammates, highlighting one of the many sports they enjoyed.
In a particularly powerful moment, Schorn played security footage captured by a home camera. The video depicted Nguyen pointing a gun at Gianni Melchiondo, her neighbor and nephew of her ex-husband. Although she attempted to shoot, the gun failed to fire, and Melchiondo managed to disarm her, an act described by Schorn as “nothing short of remarkable.”
Melchiondo’s mother, who is the aunt to Jeffrey and Nelson, testified, expressing gratitude that the gun misfired, potentially sparing additional lives.
The Tragic Morning
On the morning of May 2, 2022, at 7:05 a.m., the Upper Makefield Township Police were dispatched to the residence on Timber Ridge Road following a report of an armed individual. The person in question was identified as Trinh T. Nguyen, who fled the scene in a white minivan after being disarmed. Authorities issued a BOLO (Be On the Lookout) alert to locate her.
Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers were informed that Nguyen resided in the house with her two young sons. The mother of Gianni Melchiondo, along with a responding Upper Makefield Township Police officer, entered Nguyen’s residence and discovered the boys in their beds, both suffering from gunshot wounds to their heads.
Both boys were immediately transported to the hospital, with one of them being carried by an Upper Makefield Detective, who is now a Detective with the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, the boys tragically succumbed to their injuries on May 6, 2022.
The investigation into the incident involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including Bucks County Detectives, Upper Makefield Township Police, Lower Makefield Township Police, Newtown Township Police, Newtown Borough Police, and the Central Bucks Crime Scene Unit. Their combined efforts aimed to locate Nguyen and secure the crime scene.
At around 11:30 a.m., law enforcement officers discovered Nguyen inside her parked minivan at the United Methodist Church in Washington’s Crossing. She was promptly taken into custody. The investigation revealed that after the shooting, she had fled to New Jersey in an attempt to acquire narcotics, which she subsequently consumed in an effort to take her own life.
A search of the minivan yielded significant evidence, including .38-caliber ammunition, empty and full suspected heroin packages, and swabs of suspected blood. Additionally, a note was found on the passenger-side dashboard, indicating the location of the boys’ bodies and urging the reader to call 911.
Further investigation led detectives to execute a search warrant at Nguyen’s residence, where they discovered and seized a handwritten will dated a week prior to the shooting. The will provided instructions on how to handle Nguyen’s ashes and the ashes of her sons. The document was signed by “TRINH NGUYEN.”
Moreover, a .38-caliber Ruger revolver was found near the front of the Melchiondo residence.

During the court hearing, Assistant District Attorney Schorn commended the exceptional work carried out by the investigative team, highlighting the bravery of Gianni Melchiondo, whose actions likely prevented further harm during Nguyen’s rampage.
Schorn emphasized the outstanding effort invested by the team, which ultimately led to the successful conviction of the defendant.
This comprehensive investigation was conducted by Bucks County Detectives and Upper Makefield Township Police, with First Assistant District Attorney Jennifer M. Schorn and Deputy District Attorney John T. Fegley, Chief of Appeals, leading the prosecution.
