Tragedy struck the Hudson Valley as flooding caused by the December Nor’easter claimed the life of a woman. The New York State Police confirmed that a submerged vehicle was found in Catskill, New York, as a result of Monday’s heavy flooding.
Submerged Vehicle Discovered in Catskill, New York
On December 18, 2023, at approximately 10:15 a.m., troopers from the Catskill barracks responded to a 911 call reporting a vehicle submerged in water near Cauterskill Road in Catskill, New York.
The torrential rain and flooding caused by the December Nor’easter resulted in widespread road closures and dangerous conditions throughout the Hudson Valley.
Efforts to Reach the Submerged Vehicle
Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a white 2019 Chevrolet SUV submerged in water off the east shoulder of the roadway.
“Troopers attempted to reach the vehicle, but due to the heavy water flow, they were unable to do so,” stated the New York State Police in a press release.
Recovery Operations and Identification of the Victim
The New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team promptly arrived at the scene with an airboat to conduct the recovery operations. With the assistance of the Underwater Recovery Team, the police successfully retrieved the 76-year-old driver from the SUV.
The victim was identified as MaryAnn Hyland, a 76-year-old woman from Leeds, New York. Tragically, she was found deceased in the driver’s seat, according to the New York State Police.
Following the recovery, MaryAnn Hyland’s body was transported to Ellis Hospital in Schenectady, New York.
