Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team Investigating Shooting Incident on Red Earth Cree Nation

The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) of Saskatchewan is currently conducting an investigation into a shooting incident that took place on Tuesday within the premises of the Red Earth Cree Nation.

During the early hours of the morning, at approximately 3:40 am, Carrot River RCMP received a report of gunshots on the Cree Nation. Upon arrival, two individuals were apprehended by the RCMP, but formal charges have not yet been filed. The authorities identified a 25-year-old individual as being involved and successfully located him. Reports indicate that shots were fired at the patrol vehicles by the suspect. Subsequently, an altercation ensued after the officers left their vehicles. In response, a member of the RCMP discharged their service carbine, resulting in the man, who hailed from Red Earth Cree Nation, being struck. Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the attending EMS, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. One officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the altercation.

Following the incident, SIRT initiated an immediate investigation. During their thorough examination of the scene, a shotgun was discovered and subsequently seized as an exhibit.

SIRT’s investigation will focus on assessing the conduct of the police officers involved in the incident, including a comprehensive examination of the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. At present, no further details regarding the investigation will be disclosed. However, upon the completion of the investigation, a final report will be made available to the public within a period of 90 days.
