Accident – Death – Obituary News : CARROLL COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) – The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has made a significant breakthrough in the case of missing 5-year-old Logan Bowman, who was tragically murdered almost twenty years ago. The department has recently announced the positive identification of human remains discovered in a wooded area in Galax, Virginia.

Back in September 2022, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of human remains found on Iron Ridge Road. The investigation revealed that the remains had been in the woods for an extended period. Determined to solve this cold case, the authorities sought the assistance of Othran Inc., a renowned Texas-based company specializing in Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing and Forensic Genetic Genealogy.

Thanks to the cutting-edge technology provided by Othran Inc., a full DNA profile was developed from the remains. This breakthrough allowed law enforcement to employ Forensic Genetic Genealogy, along with two DNA comparisons of family members, ultimately leading to the positive identification of the remains as those of Logan Nataniel Bowman.

Logan was just five years old when he went missing from the Grayson County area in January of 2003. As the search for him unfolded, authorities charged his mother, Cynthia Davis, and her boyfriend at the time, Dennis Schermerhorn, in connection to his disappearance.

In a previous report from February 2023, it was revealed that Davis pleaded guilty to two counts of child neglect and one count of homicide in Grayson County Circuit Court. Court records indicated that she received a 10-year sentence for each count of child neglect, with those sentences suspended. Additionally, Davis was sentenced to 30 years for the homicide charge, with 15 years suspended.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that this is an ongoing investigation, and further charges are expected to be brought forth as new evidence emerges.
