Philadelphia Police Sergeant Richard Mendez Murder Case: Prosecution Presents Strong Evidence Against Suspects

PHILADELPHIA – The prosecution meticulously built its case on Wednesday against the three individuals accused of the murder of Philadelphia Police Sergeant Richard Mendez. In a trial that lasted several hours, the prosecution presented compelling evidence to establish the guilt of the defendants.

The tragic incident unfolded on October 12, when Sergeant Richard Mendez and Officer Raul Ortiz arrived at their workplace, Philadelphia International Airport, around 11 p.m. Shortly after their arrival, the officers heard the sound of breaking glass and observed a group of individuals attempting to break into a car in the airport parking lot. A confrontation ensued between the officers and the suspects, resulting in gunfire.

Tragically, Sergeant Mendez, a dedicated officer with over two decades of service, sustained four gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the hospital. Officer Ortiz, a 60-year-old veteran of the force, was shot once in the arm but survived the attack and was released from the hospital a few days later.

In the following week, authorities apprehended three individuals in connection with the shooting. The suspects were identified as Alexander Batista-Polanco, 21, from Camden, New Jersey; Hendrick Pena-Fernandez, 21, from Pennsauken, New Jersey; and Yobranny Martinez Fernandez, 18, from Camden County, New Jersey. All three suspects were charged with murder in relation to Sergeant Mendez’s untimely death.

Another individual, Jesus Herman Madera Duran, 18, who was believed to be involved in the murder, lost his life during the exchange of gunfire.

During the court proceedings on Wednesday, the prosecution presented a recorded call made by one of the defendants on the night of the shooting. Additionally, two eyewitnesses who were present at the parking lot testified, providing crucial details about the incident.

One witness, who was searching for her car in the parking garage, recounted hearing a struggle followed by multiple gunshots. Fearful for her safety, she hid behind a nearby vehicle while instructing her husband to call 911. According to her testimony, she witnessed a black SUV speeding away from the scene.

The prosecution also introduced a homicide detective from the Philadelphia Police Department, who provided extensive information about the stolen Dodge Durango used by the suspects. The detective explained how cellular data and surveillance footage were crucial in tracking the vehicle’s movements on the night of the murder. The SUV was captured on surveillance cameras entering the airport parking garage at around 10:30 p.m. and leaving approximately 30 minutes later.

According to the detective’s testimony, the stolen SUV was later spotted outside the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Surveillance footage revealed an individual exiting the vehicle, placing another person on the ground, and then driving away. The person on the ground was later identified as Jesus Herman Madera Duran, who tragically succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The detective further explained that cellular data played a crucial role in tracking the suspects’ movements to Monmouth Junction, New Jersey. In the early morning hours of October 13, the stolen vehicle was discovered burned in Cranberry Township, where it was subsequently recovered by the authorities.

In a show of support, the wife and daughter of Sergeant Richard Mendez attended the court proceedings, standing alongside Philadelphia police officers. Family members and friends of the three defendants were also present.

The defendants remain in custody, and the next court date has been scheduled for January 10.
