Human Remains Found in Galax Identified as Missing Five-Year-Old Boy

CARROLL COUNTY, Va. – The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that human remains discovered in Galax in September 2022 have been identified as those of a missing five-year-old boy.

On September 6, 2022, authorities responded to a wooded area near Iron Ridge Road in Galax following the report of human remains being found. The investigation revealed that the remains had been at the location for a significant period of time.

Thanks to the assistance of Othram, Inc., a Texas-based private company specializing in Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing and Forensic Genetic Genealogy, the sheriff’s office successfully identified the remains as belonging to Logan Bowman. Logan, who went missing in Grayson County in January 2003, was only five years old at the time of his disappearance.

An earlier investigation had led to the arrest of Logan’s biological mother, Cynthia Davis, and her then-boyfriend, Dennis Schermerhorn. The Grayson County authorities charged them in connection with Logan’s disappearance back in 2003.

Dennis Schermerhorn was sentenced to one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. However, the most serious charge against him, felony murder, was dismissed in 2004 due to insufficient evidence in the case.

In April 2004, Cynthia Davis entered an Alford plea to second-degree murder charges and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has stated that the investigation into Logan’s case is still ongoing, and additional charges are expected in the future.
