The incident occurred on July 11, 2022, at approximately 12:50 p.m. in the 6400 block of Hellyer Avenue. Upon arrival, responding officers discovered a man who was receiving CPR from a nearby bystander. He was subsequently transported to a local hospital where he tragically succumbed to his injuries.

According to the subsequent investigation, it was revealed that the deceased had been involved in a physical altercation with an unidentified individual prior to the arrival of the police. The location of the incident is a desolate stretch of Hellyer Avenue that runs parallel to Coyote Creek and is surrounded by open land.

The victim has been identified as 51-year-old Rene Joseph Gilbert. On December 12, the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office officially determined his cause of death to be a homicide.

According to the coroner’s report, Gilbert, who was listed as a transient, tragically succumbed to methamphetamine toxicity compounded by hypertension and heart disease, further exacerbated by a recent physical altercation.
