According to Captain Jack Kennedy of the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit, the incident occurred when a vehicle was pulled over by TPD narcotics officers on 37th Street East near the intersection of James I Harrison Pkwy, due to a traffic violation.

During the stop, one of the officers noticed a handgun in the man’s waistband while asking him to exit the vehicle. The officer immediately ordered the suspect not to touch the firearm. However, the suspect resisted and attempted to reach for the pistol, leading to a physical altercation between the officer and the suspect.

Despite the officer’s efforts to prevent the suspect from accessing the weapon, the suspect managed to remove the handgun from his waistband and ignored commands to drop it. In response, one of the officers fired several shots, resulting in the suspect being struck multiple times. Medical assistance was immediately called, but unfortunately, the suspect succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

As of now, the identity of the deceased suspect has not been released. The authorities have informed the man’s next-of-kin, and his name will be disclosed at a later stage. The ongoing investigation will be thoroughly examined by the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney’s office before being presented to a grand jury, adhering to the standard procedure for cases involving the use of deadly force by law enforcement.

In accordance with the Tuscaloosa Police Department protocol, both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave. “Based on the available facts, I have confidence that our officers acted appropriately to ensure their safety,” said Chief Blankley. “We will also provide the necessary mental health support to our officers who have experienced a traumatic event.
