A 19-year-old man from Fort Smith pleads guilty to second-degree murder charge

A 19-year-old man from Fort Smith, who cannot be named due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder. The plea was made in the NWT Supreme Court on Wednesday, as reported by CBC.

The Youth Criminal Justice Act typically prohibits the disclosure of a young offender’s identity, hence the reason behind the man’s anonymity. However, the seriousness of the charge and subsequent guilty plea have brought this case into the public eye.

In March 2022, the accused was apprehended following a three-day police operation in Fort Smith. The operation was initiated after gunshots were heard, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reported a suspicious death.

Subsequently, in April 2022, the then-17-year-old was charged with murder by the police. The allegation was that he had fatally shot a 50-year-old man.

More recently, the CBC has reported that the man, while awaiting trial, admitted to assaulting another inmate at Yellowknife’s jail. Additionally, he is accused of pulling out a homemade knife and escaping from a youth facility in Whitehorse during a temporary evacuation caused by wildfires in Yellowknife this summer.

Following his escape, the man was eventually apprehended and returned to Yellowknife’s jail.
