Accident – Death – Obituary News : Detroit Police Fatally Shoot Man Who Dragged Officer During Traffic Stop

Detroit police officers fatally shot a man on Wednesday night after he allegedly dragged an officer with his car while attempting to flee a traffic stop in the city’s west side. The incident took place around 10:15 p.m., according to the Detroit Police Department’s gang intelligence unit.

Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald stated that when the officers pulled the man over, he refused to hand over his identification and instead tried to drive away. In an effort to stop the vehicle, one of the officers reached into the car with his leg and stepped on the brake pedal. However, this attempt was unsuccessful, and the officer was dragged approximately 20 yards.

The officer’s partner then joined the struggle by attempting to use a Taser, but it did not immobilize the driver. The man put the car in reverse, causing the officer to be dragged again as the vehicle moved backward. In response to the ongoing threat, the officer who was being dragged fired two shots at the driver, striking him in the upper chest.

The driver, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The officer who was dragged is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.

During a subsequent search of the vehicle, the Detroit Police discovered a Glock ghost gun with an extended magazine and a switch that can transform it into a fully automatic firearm. Additionally, a significant quantity of drugs, including oxycodone, crack cocaine, ecstasy, promethazine, marijuana, a scale, and cash, were found on the front driver’s side floorboard. Ghost guns, which do not have serial numbers and are unregulated and untraceable, pose a significant concern to law enforcement.

Assistant Police Chief Fitzgerald emphasized the danger posed by the weapon, stating, “If he pulled the trigger on the officers, 15 rounds come out quickly. You can do a lot of damage. It’s terrifying.”

The passenger in the vehicle was taken into custody for questioning but has since been released, according to the police. The driver, however, was out on bond for felony charges of receiving and concealing a stolen vehicle and carrying a concealed weapon. Possessing a weapon would have violated the conditions of his bond.

In line with Detroit Police Chief James White’s commitment to routinely release footage of police shootings and critical incidents on YouTube within 45 days, body camera footage of the incident will be made available. However, the Detroit Police Board of Commissioners is advocating for the footage to be released within 12 days, and they have drafted a city ordinance to propose to the city council.

As per department policy, the officer involved in the incident will be placed on administrative leave..
