Accident – death – Obituary News : Dexter Martinez, the prime suspect in the deadly shooting that took place on Colfax and Verbena in East Denver, made his first appearance in court today. The 25-year-old, along with two other individuals, stands accused of killing one person and injuring five others during the incident that occurred on November 1, 2022. The Denver District Attorney’s Office announced on Thursday that Martinez has been sentenced to 55 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree assault.

The shooting incident unfolded when the Denver Police received a shotspotter alert and multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire in the area at around 2 p.m. on November 1. Tragically, Allen Dawkins, aged 31, lost his life in the shooting. The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner identified Dawkins as the deceased victim. The other five victims, consisting of four men and two women, were fortunate enough to survive the attack.

According to the police investigation, Martinez and his accomplices arrived at the scene in a vehicle. They exited the vehicle, brandishing handguns, and proceeded to unleash a hail of bullets before swiftly retreating to their car and fleeing the scene. The suspects abandoned the initial vehicle near 12th Avenue and Yosemite Street, where they transferred to a black Ford Explorer and made their escape. Several hours after the shooting, the black Ford Explorer was discovered in the 3900 block of Colorado Boulevard by investigators.

This incident occurred mere blocks away from another tragic shooting that claimed the life of community activist Ma Kaing. The Denver community has been reeling from these senseless acts of violence, and the arrest and sentencing of Dexter Martinez provide some measure of justice for the victims and their families.

Dexter Martinez, having pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and first-degree assault, now faces 55 years in prison. This sentence serves as a stern reminder that the consequences of such heinous crimes are severe and that the judicial system will not tolerate acts of violence that endanger innocent lives.
