Cromwell Mother Charged with Evading After September Crash Involving Daughter Found Unresponsive in Connecticut River

A mother from Cromwell, UK is now facing charges for evading responsibilities after a devastating car crash in September, which left her young daughter unresponsive and later found in the Connecticut River. The Cromwell Police Department has arrested 24-year-old Devoni Miller and charged her with several serious offenses, including risk of injury to a child, second-degree reckless endangerment, evading responsibilities with injuries, and reckless driving. The incident occurred on September 11 and has left the community in shock.

According to the Cromwell police, officers swiftly responded to a motor vehicle crash that took place on Main Street near Shadow Lane. The vehicle responsible for the crash fled the scene, only to be later discovered on Route 9. The Connecticut State Police, who joined the investigation, reported that Miller was driving a Hyundai Sonata SE south on the Exit 25 on-ramp in an attempt to merge onto Route 9. It was alleged that she struck the rear bumper of a Kia Forte driven by a 59-year-old woman from Rocky Hill. This collision caused the Hyundai to veer across the center median and into the northbound lanes, eventually colliding with a metal guardrail.

Immediately following the crash, Miller left the scene with her young child, prompting an extensive search by responding troopers. The unoccupied Hyundai was found on Route 9, while Miller was located walking along Route 9 North approximately two hours after the incident. She was taken to Middlesex Hospital for evaluation. Tragically, during the search, Miller’s daughter, identified later as 2-year-old Deroyal Miller, was discovered unresponsive in a rocky area of the Connecticut River. Authorities swiftly rescued her from the water and rushed her to Middlesex Hospital, but despite their best efforts, she was pronounced dead.

The death of Deroyal Miller immediately raised suspicions among state police investigators, leading them to consider it as a potential homicide. Earlier this month, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner confirmed that Deroyal Miller’s cause of death was drowning, further intensifying the investigation.

Following her arrest by Cromwell police, Devoni Miller was released on a $5,000 non-surety bond. However, she was subsequently turned over to the Connecticut State Police, who possess an active arrest warrant for her.

This heartbreaking incident has left the community in mourning and serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible driving and protecting the safety of young children. The authorities continue to investigate this tragic event, seeking justice for Deroyal Miller and ensuring accountability for her mother’s actions.
