California Man Arrested in Maryland Cold Case Rape After DNA Match

Law enforcement officials in Maryland have apprehended a 62-year-old man from California after advancements in DNA technology allegedly linked him to a cold case rape that occurred 31 years ago in Montgomery County. Xavier Battice was arrested by the major crimes cold case unit of the Montgomery County Police Department and is now facing charges of rape.

According to the Montgomery County Police Department, the incident took place on September 24, 1992, when the female victim disembarked from a bus near Wisconsin Avenue in Chevy Chase, Maryland. The suspect, later identified as Xavier Battice, allegedly followed the woman to a nearby park where he sexually assaulted her before fleeing the scene.

Advancements in DNA Technology

Thanks to the relentless efforts of the Cold Case detectives, evidence collected from the crime scene was sent to the crime laboratory, where a DNA profile was created. This DNA profile was then submitted to the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) and matched to Xavier Battice.

Arrest and Investigation

Following the DNA match, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Battice, charging him with two counts of second-degree rape and a single count of second-degree sexual assault. The Morgan Hill Police Department in California was contacted by Montgomery County detectives, who arrested Battice and held him until Friday. He was then transported back to Montgomery County, Maryland, where he underwent processing and is currently being held without bond.
