Accident – Death – Obituary News : In Sunflower County, Mississippi, last week, a grand jury made the controversial decision not to press criminal charges against a police officer involved in the shooting of an unarmed 11-year-old boy. The incident took place last May when two Indianola police officers responded to a call regarding a possible domestic disturbance at Nakala Murry’s home. Murry had instructed her son, Aderrien Murry, to call the police after a threatening encounter with the father of one of her younger children. However, by the time the officers arrived, the man had already left.

Upon arrival, the officers demanded that the residents vacate the house. It was during this time that Sgt. Greg Capers, one of the officers, opened fire on Aderrien, shooting him in the chest. Nakala reported hearing a single gunshot as she left the house to address the officers. Aderrien had approached the officers from around a corner inside the home and was shot without warning by Capers. Following the incident, Capers was placed on paid administrative leave while an investigation took place. In the seven months since the shooting, Murry, along with her attorney Carlos Moore and their supporters, have been calling for Capers to be fired and face criminal charges for his actions. Aderrien suffered severe injuries, including broken ribs, a lacerated liver, and a collapsed lung.

Despite the outcry, the grand jury decided not to press charges against Capers. In response, Murry is demanding the release of the body-cam footage that captured the incident. The footage, which is public property, had been locked away by the police department for months until Murry and a select few from her legal team were allowed to view it under strict confidentiality conditions. Since watching the footage, Murry and her legal team have been adamant about releasing it to seek justice for her son.

Murry’s attorney, Carlos Moore, stated during a recent press conference that they will not let the grand jury’s decision halt their efforts for justice. Moore believes that unanswered questions remain and that the shooting of Aderrien was not justified. They plan to pursue justice through the civil legal process. However, the city of Indianola and the police department have fought against releasing the footage, citing concerns for privacy even though the names of the victim and the officer are already public knowledge. Capers and his lawyers are currently petitioning to have him reinstated on active duty with the police force.

Moore has expressed his belief that the release of the body-cam footage would lead to significant public outrage, and this is why the police are refusing to make it public. He intends to file a federal lawsuit to compel the release of the footage. Aderrien, who has undergone a long and difficult recovery, is now receiving counseling to address the psychological trauma caused by Capers’ attack. The child still struggles to breathe and has had difficulty understanding why he was shot by the officer.

As the year 2023 comes to a close, Mapping Police Violence reports that police have killed 1,141 people across the United States. Over 600 of these deaths occurred since Aderrien was shot in May. The Democratic Party and organizations like Black Lives Matter often attribute these incidents to police officer racism. However, in this particular case, little has been said by these groups as the officers involved and the victim are all African Americans.

The truth is that the police act as armed agents of the capitalist state, enforcing social inequality and the class system through violence and repression. Just this week, both the Democrats and Republicans in Congress joined forces to support a massive increase in the Pentagon budget, totaling $883.7 billion. This allocation of resources will further militarize police forces and perpetuate social inequality, fueling working-class struggles against police violence. It is clear that the root cause of these issues lies in the capitalist system itself.
