Responding to a report of a carjacking and potential shooting at an apartment complex on Miramar Avenue in Unincorporated San Leandro (Ashland), deputies and Emergency Medical Services found Iquite in critical condition. Despite their efforts to save him, Iquite tragically lost his life.

Over the following months, investigators diligently pursued leads and gathered evidence, unveiling a complex network of individuals involved in Iquite’s untimely demise. The primary suspect, identified as 18-year-old Yefry Aguilar Rubio, had just celebrated his 18th birthday in the same month as the incident, although he was 17 years old at the time, according to deputies.

Investigators also implicated Aguilar Rubio’s 17-year-old girlfriend and the girlfriend’s 16-year-old brother in the homicide, as stated by the investigators themselves.

Evidence uncovered a disturbing timeline, indicating that Aguilar Rubio and his girlfriend had been discussing harm to Iquite since June 2023, according to the sheriff’s investigators. Allegedly, the suspects lured the victim from Redwood City, where all parties involved resided, to San Leandro, where the fatal incident occurred.

On December 13, 2023, with the assistance of the Redwood City Police Department, investigators executed search and arrest warrants at the residences of the suspects in Redwood City. Aguilar Rubio’s girlfriend and her brother were apprehended, and evidence related to the homicide was recovered.

The Fremont Police Department also played a crucial role in the investigation, aiding in serving a search warrant at a residence in Fremont that the suspects had visited before and after Iquite’s murder. Inside the residence, investigators discovered evidence of a significant identity theft and fraud operation, as confirmed by the sheriff’s office. The occupants were arrested, and additional evidence, including a stolen firearm, was seized.

At the time of the arrests, Aguilar Rubio was already in custody in San Mateo County for an unrelated offense. Investigators subsequently met with Rubio and charged him with Iquite’s murder. The case has been submitted to the District Attorney’s Office for charges of conspiracy, carjacking, and homicide.

In accordance with Proposition 57 and Welfare and Institutions Code 707, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office has requested the District Attorney’s Office to file a motion with the juvenile court, considering adult prosecution for all three suspects involved in this heinous crime..
