Interstate 75 Reopens Following Fatal Crash in Queensgate

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – After a reported abduction led to a tragic crash involving a pedestrian in Queensgate, Interstate 75 has finally reopened on Tuesday afternoon. Cincinnati police have confirmed that the alleged abductor, identified as 34-year-old Tommy Ashley, was killed when he ran across the highway on Monday night. Unfortunately, the vehicle responsible for the incident fled the scene, leaving authorities with an ongoing investigation.

Tommy Ashley’s family has come forward to identify him as the alleged suspect. However, the woman who police believed was abducted has denied being a victim and stated that Ashley was actually one of her close friends.

In an interview, the woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, expressed her deep connection with Ashley and the impact he had on her life. Despite their relatively short friendship, she described him as a lifelong friend, highlighting the strong bond they shared. “His memories are going to live through everyone, and no one is going to forget him. He definitely made a mark on everybody,” she said.

According to the woman, Ashley was experiencing a mental health episode at the time, which ultimately led to the events on Interstate 75. She emphasized that it was crucial for people to understand that this was not an abduction or kidnapping but a result of his mental health struggles. “Tommy was dealing with mental health issues that caused him to believe people were following him, chasing him, and trying to either take him away or kill him,” she explained.

Before reaching Interstate 75, the woman mentioned that she spent hours driving around with Ashley in the car. During this time, one of their friends alerted the Cincinnati police about the situation unfolding. Concerned for their safety, she attempted to stop the vehicle on the interstate. However, Ashley misinterpreted her actions, believing she intended to harm him. “I unlocked the door and said, ‘Go, go. Here, you’re free, you’re good.’ He stepped out of the car, looked at the police for about 5 seconds, and said, ‘I knew you weren’t going to kill me,’ and then took off running,” she recalled.

Regrettably, the woman did not witness what happened to Ashley afterward but later discovered that he had been struck and killed by a vehicle. She had the heartbreaking responsibility of informing his friend and family about the tragic news. She expressed her disappointment in the media’s portrayal of the incident as a supposed abduction, emphasizing that it misrepresented the true nature of the man they knew. “That’s not the man he is,” she affirmed.

Friends and family of Ashley have shared that he struggled with mental illness and had previously sought help. They firmly believe that if he had received the support he needed, he would still be alive today. “We would be able to hug him,” the woman lamented.

Described as a good-hearted individual, Ashley was loved by everyone around him. His infectious enthusiasm for dancing and his ability to bring smiles to people’s faces will be remembered by those who knew him.
