The incident unfolded when the kidnapping of a young girl, who resided in Nangli Poona village, was reported at the Swaroop Nagar police station on the evening of December 12. Initially, an FIR was registered under Section 363 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for kidnapping, and a thorough investigation was initiated. The child’s parents, who work as laborers in a factory and reside in rented accommodation, were left distraught by the distressing turn of events.

During the search for the missing girl, the police meticulously examined CCTV footage, which eventually led them to identify the prime suspect, Sanjeev Rana, a 52-year-old resident of Nangli Poona. However, when the authorities arrived to apprehend him, it was discovered that Rana had been admitted to a hospital in Rohini following a severe traffic accident on December 15. Due to his medical condition, he was deemed unfit to provide a statement, further complicating the case.

Subsequent investigations revealed that the girl had willingly entered Rana’s vehicle on December 12 at approximately 2 p.m. On December 17, once Rana’s health had improved sufficiently for him to provide a statement, he confessed to abducting and killing the young girl on the same day. He disclosed that he had disposed of her body in the Munak canal. As a result, additional sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act were added to the FIR. Following his discharge from the hospital, Rana was promptly arrested, and an extensive search operation to recover the victim’s body was launched.

Since December 17, a team of five divers has been assigned the task of meticulously scouring the Munak canal in search of the girl’s remains. Additionally, specialized teams have been established to thoroughly investigate Rana’s movements on December 12 through technical surveillance methods. The authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a comprehensive probe into the heinous crime.
